STUDY REVEALS HOW HIGH-CBD MAY CONTAIN 90% MARIJUANA
A group of researchers just made a discovery that will change everything we know about hemp, marijuana, and high-CBD products. In their study, which discovered how high-CBD might contain 90% marijuana, the researchers extracted and analyzed the complete genome of a new cannabis strain. They also discovered how breeding lower-THC hemp with high-THC marijuana plant varieties would allow breeders to develop new varieties, which in turn produce CBD in high levels.
A new genomics study carried out by the University of Minnesota and hemp breeding company Sunrise Genetics discovered that high-CBD plants get approximately 90% of genes from marijuana. This finding may change the way we see CBD and THC or weed even as it continues to form a lot of questions in the mind of researchers too.
Experts like Schwartz, who is a co-author of sunrise genetics, said that breeding feat poses a challenge and a large risk for farmers. Schwartz also submitted that "the genes that allow for the production of CBD are also a bit 'leaky." Results obtained show that only about 5% of the entire compounds will be transformed into THC. With this, farmers who grow high-CBD-yielding strains until they mature stand a risk of cultivating a strain with a THC content higher than 0.3%.
George Weiblen, a co-author and a professor at the University of Minnesota, said, "These high-CBD plants are genetically marijuana for the most part, and they can't be expected to meet the legal definition of industrial hemp in every situation." He also added that "CBD products — such as flowers, extracts, and edibles — that are labeled 'hemp' could be incorrectly labeled and falsely branded. Fiber hemp and products made from hemp seeds, however, are drug-free." Weiblen, together with a team of other researchers, developed a genetics test sometime late 2020 to predict whether or not a cannabis plant can produce mostly THC molecules or CBD.
The researchers were also able to examine varieties of cannabis which includes drug types that can be used to produce a large amount of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The group of scientists was able to find out that when hemp type and THC are bred, plants can swap genes and make results to a high level of CBD.
Is this something we should worry about?
Although the results of this study may look scary, it is pertinent to note that not all cannabis plants may end up having more than the required 0.3%. To this end, CBD users are still safe with consuming high-CBD strains. The findings of the research may vary on the field, and since most cannabis plants came from marijuana after little genetic manipulations, it is okay for the plants to have some attributes of their parent plant.
High CBD strains are still safe for consumption. They are capable of producing several therapeutic benefits regardless of the THC content.
